Hiring a Security Officer
You realized you need security! That's the first step. Now it's time to hire an officer. As you saw in our previous post here (Types of Security (fenrirtacticalsolutions.blogspot.com) , there are so many types of security. Once you find out what kind you need for your business or residence, it's time to start hiring.
Washington State has stricter regulations on who can be a security guard. Especially an armed one.
To become an armed security guard in Washington, applicants must:
- be at least 21 years old
- be already licensed as an unarmed security guard
- have no felony convictions within the past 10 years
- submit to drug testing, which may be ongoing
- submit a fingerprint card
- have not committed any acts of fraud
- be employed by, or have an offer of employment from, a licensed private security company
- hold a Washington driver’s license
- have a commission issued firearms certificate that is current
Fenrir Tactical Solutions put together a list of things that could be beneficial to think about in the hiring process.
- Make sure the company you select is insured (required by law). This will save you unbelievable amounts of money! Of course, if people are avoiding the regulations of being a security company they are most likely avoiding other issues as well.
- Communication- You'll spend a decent amount of time talking to your officers or their employer. Make sure they aren't impossible to get ahold of. They should leave you with multiple contact points in case of emergencies. You also should be hearing from your security company regularly for check-ins. Pay attention to how long they take to get back to your emails or phone calls. The last thing you want to be thinking of in a traumatic situation is how to find your security officer.
- Reliability- It's so essential for guards to be at the right place at the right time. Always make sure you go with a reliable company that is where they say they are going to be. There are so many options out there for guard tracking (we use destiny software), so you can see in real-time if your guard is where they say they are or if they're being negligent of their duties.
- Tools- Are you looking for an armed guard? Do you prefer them to carry items such as a baton, handcuffs, tasers, or other compliance tools? Do they have 2 way radios that work if there is no cell service? Those are all highly important to think of when going through the hiring process.
- Presence- If you're hiring a guard for their presence, you should notice things like their posture, alertness and voice. Are they intimidating or comforting?
